In Memoriam is an experimental narrative experience created in Unreal Engine 5. It is not a traditional game — there are no missions, no combat systems, no scores. Instead, it is an interactive descent through memory, grief, and emotional reconstruction.

Inspired by psychological models of bereavement and personal archival materials, the project invites the player to explore symbolic spaces shaped by sound, light, and fractured imagery.


▌ STORY

"In Memoriam" — Latin for "in memory of" — explores the emotional process of grief. The experience loosely follows Colin Murray Parkes' stages of mourning: shock, longing, disorganization, and reorganization.

Each level represents a psychological state rather than a physical location. There is no narration explaining what to do. You move forward by listening, observing, and interacting with fragments of the past.

A gramophone record. A camcorder. A photograph of a house in the woods.

Some objects respond. Some remain silent. Some open the way forward.


▌ VISUAL STYLE

The environment combines:

  • Photogrammetry-based reconstructions

  • Retro-inspired atmospheric lighting
  • VHS-like memory distortion aesthetics

▌ SOUND & MUSIC

Sound is not background — it is structure.

Music triggers progression. Audio defines pacing. Silence creates tension.

The player does not unlock areas by collecting items — but by engaging with memory through sound.

The experience draws subtle inspiration from the Radiohead Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, where sound and spatial exploration merge into one emotional flow.
